Vrnda-devi’s asta-kaliya-lila narration to Lord Shiva continued. Note: The following entries are unedited, presented as it is, downloaded from Net.

Pradosh Lila 8:36-10:48 p.m.

Vrinda said, “O Muniji! There with his father, paternal uncles, their sons, and Baladeva, Krishna eats various kinds of foods like those that are chewed, those that are sucked etc. Even before Krishna entertains a desire, Radhika, through her friends, would send dressed foods to his house.

Hari, praising them, and eating them with his father etc. would, with the bards, go to the assembly hall. The friends (of Radha), that had come there having brought with them many foods, take (from his house) many kinds (of food) given by Yasoda there and also whatever is left over by Krishna .

Having brought all that, they inform Radhika of it. Radha too, along with her group of friends, having eaten it in order and being decorated by her friends, would be (ready) to meet by appointment (her lover i.e. Krishna).

‘From here on there some friend is sent away by me’. Met by her, Radhika, surrounded by her friends, and having put on a dress proper for white (i.e. bright) or black (i.e. dark) night goes to the chamber having divine jewels, near Yamuna.

Krishna also, seeing their curious things, then having heard delightful music from Katyayani, and having properly pleased them with (gifts of) wealth and grains, and propitiated by people, goes with his mother to His sleeping quarters.

Nisha Lila 10:48 p.m. to 3:36 a.m.

When Krishna’s mother departs, Krishna, having eaten, comes here—to the rendezvous—unnoticed and with his beloved. Both Radha-Madhava  meet here and play in the groves of trees, with many sports, with Krishna’s dance with the cowherdess, accom-panied with singing and instrumental music and laughter.

Thus having spent two watches and a half of the night in sporting, the two desiring to sleep, enter, unnoticed by female birds, the bower. There, in the solitary place, the two sleep on a charming bed made of flowers and for sport, and are served by their female friends. Thus I have told you the full daily life of Hari. O Narada, even sinners who hear this narration are immediately liberated.” (Padma Purana, patalakhanda cp. 83.91-105) Radha Govinda Yugala’s blissful lilas ki jai! Vrnda-Narada manjari sadhana shiksha ki jai! Jaya Jaya Sri Radhe!

Vrinda Teaches Shiva part 3 ..... by Mahanidhi Madan Gopal Das

Vrnda-devi’s asta-kaliya-lila narration to Lord Shiva continued.

Note: The following entries are unedited, presented as it is, downloaded from Net.

Aparahna Lila 3:36-6 p.m.

Vrinda-devi said, “O Naradaji! Then having heard the mutual wordy fight among the särikäs and the parrots, Radha-Madhava, desiring to go home, move out from that place. Having allowed his beloved (to go), Krishna would go to the cows.

Radha, accompanied by the circle of gopis goes to the Sun’s abode (temple). Having gone a little away from there, Hari, again, returning, after having put on the dress of a Brähmaëa, goes to the Sun’s abode. Requested by her friends, Sri Krishna would worship the Sun there, with Vedas (hymns), containing jokes and composed then only. Then the clever ones, having recognised their lover who makes himself known, merge in the ocean of joy, and do not know themselves or other (persons).

Sayana Lila 6-8:36 p.m.

Having thus passed two watches and a half in various sports, Radhe-Shyama go home, and Krishna would go (to the place) of the cows. O sage, Krishna, joining his friends, and taking the cows from all sides, comes playing upon the flute joyfully to Vraja.

Then, all like Nanda and others, so also women and children, hearing the sound of Hari’s flute, and also seeing the sky full of dust (raised) by the cows, give up all their jobs, and being eager to see Krishna go towards him.

Krishna also, joining all the residents of Vraja, on the royal path, at Vraja-gate—wherever they are—(honours all) as before in due order— by means of seeing them, touching them, speaking to them, looking them with a smile, saluting with words and physically the old cowherds, and saluting his parents and Rohini also (in such a way that) the eight parts (of the body touch the ground).

O Narada, so also Krishna’s beloved Radhaji with a modest side glance. Thus very much and properly respected by the residents of Vraja, having sent the cows to the cowstall, Govinda goes, after being request-ed by his parents to his abode with his brother.

Having bathed there, having drunk (milk), having eaten a little, and being allowed by his mother, Krishna, with a desire to milk the cows, again goes to the cowstall. Having milked them, and got them milked, having made some of them drink (water), be, being followed by hundreds of venerable men, Krishna goes home with his father. (Padma Purana, patalakhanda cp. 83.76-90) More part four. Sri Krishna asta-kaliya-lila ki jai! Radha Govinda Yugala ki jai! Jaya Jaya Sri Radhe!

Vrnda Teaches Shiva part 2 ..... by Mahanidhi Madan Gopal Das

#Manjaris #Shiva #RaganugaBhakti #ManjariSvarupa #GopiBhava #BhaktiSadhana #Bhakti #Vrindadevi #Vrindavana

Vrnda-devi’s asta-kaliya-lila narration to Lord Shiva continued. Note: The following entries are unedited, presented as it is, downloaded from Net.

Madhyahna Lila 10:48 a.m. to 3:36 p.m.

Vrinda-devi said, “O Narada, please hear attentively. Having entered the forest and having played there with his friends for a while, Sri Krishna then gladly sports there, in the forest by means of various pastimes. Then, having deceived all, and surrounded by two or three friends, Sri Krishna, being eager to see his beloved, would gladly go to the rendezvous.

Radha too, who had come home, on seeing Krishna , goes, after deceiving her elders, under the pretext of Sun-worship etc. or for collecting flowers, to the forest with a desire to meet her lover. Thus Radha-Govinda, having, after many efforts, met in the forest, gladly sport there for the (whole) day with various pastimes.

Sometimes Radha-Govinda get upon a swing and are rocked to and fro by their friends. Sometimes, Hari, deceived by the bevies of his beloveds, is seen, searching his flute dropped from his hand, and hidden by his beloved. Sri Krishna, made to laugh by them by means of merriment, remains there.

At times Radha Govinda Yugala the forest endowed with vernal breezes, and sprinkle each other with water (mixed with) sandal, or with water (mixed with) saffron etc., released from syringes, or smear each other with mud. In the same way, the friends also sprinkle them (with water etc.) and Radha-Govinda also sprinkle them.

Then Radha-Govinda, O Narada, being tired due to many pastimes proper for the time in the groves endowed with vernal breezes on all sides, resort, with their attendants, to the root of a tree, and sitting on a divine seat, drink liquor.

O best sage. Then Radha-Govinda, intoxicated due to the liquor, with their eyes closed due to sleep, holding each other’s hands, being under the influence of Cupid’s arrows, and desiring to sport, enter, with their words and mind stumbling on the path. There Radha-Madhava sport like a female elephant and (the male elephant,) the lord of the herd.

All the friends also, intoxicated by wine, and with their eyes troubled by sleep (i.e. drowsy) sleep all around in the charming bowers. Again and again incited by his beloved, Krishna , the lord, would go near all, with a separate body (for each) and simultaneously.

Having satisfied all of them as a lord of elephants satisfies the female elephants, Sri Krishna would, along with his beloved Radharani and with them, go to the lake to sport.

Then Radha-Govinda, with their attendants, sport bet-ween themselves by sprinkling water (on each other). They are adorned with garments, garlands, sandal(-pastes), and also with divine ornaments. O sage, I have there, in a chamber full of divine gems, on the bank of the lake, already arranged fruits and roots.

Hari, having eaten first, and being clasped by his beloved, and being served by two or three (maids) would go to a bed made of flowers. There, being served (by them) with tämbulas, fans and shampooing of his feet, Sri Krishna laughing with them, and remembering his beloved rejoices.

Radhika too, when Hari is asleep, extremely delighted along with her attendants,. having put her heart into him, eats what is left over (by him). Having but eaten a little there, Radha would go to the bed-chamber to see her lover’s face as the female cakora bird sees the moon. The maids there have told (her) about his having chewed the tämbula. Kishori also chews tämbulas and distributes them among her dear friends.

Krishna too, desiring to hear their free mutual talk, though sleepless, covers himself with a piece of cloth,. appearing as if he is asleep. Those too, looking at one another in jest, and getting the hint from somewhere, biting their ton-gues with their teeth, look at one another’s face.

Merged as it were into the ocean of bashfulness, the sakhis do not say anything for a moment. Just after a moment, having removed the piece of cloth from his body, and saying ‘You were really asleep’ they laugh and make Krishna laugh too.

Thus sporting with the sakhis by means (of jokes etc. causing) laughter, and having, for a moment, experienced the pleasure of sleep, Shyama sits upon the seat gladly spread by the manjaris, and Radha-Govinda having mutually staked necklaces, kisses, embraces and garments, play with dice preceded by jocular talk.

Though defeated by his beloved Krishna, saying, ‘I have won’, pro-ceeds to seize Radha’s necklace etc. and is beaten by her. Thus beaten by Radha on his lotus-like face with her hand Krishna, being dejected in his mind, thinks of going. “If, O honourable lady, I am defeated, then accept what is staked (viz.) kisses etc. offered by me.”

On his saying so Kishori would act like that to see the crookedness of his eyebrows and to hear his words of reproach. (Padma Purana, patalakhanda cp. 83.44-75) More part three. Radha-kunda nitya-lila ki jai! Radha Govinda Yugala seva ki jai! Jaya Jaya Sri Radhe!

Vrinda Teaches Shiva part 1 ...... by Mahanidhi Madan Gopal Das

#Manjaris #Shiva #RaganugaBhakti #ManjariSvarupa #GopiBhava #BhaktiSadhana #Bhakti #Vrindadevi #Vrindavana

This is part of our Padma Purana raganuga sadhana article series. Here in the ancient Vedic pramana titled Padma Purana, Narada once came to Vrindavana and asked Vrinda-devi to tell him about Lord Hari’s daily eight-fold pastimes in Vrindavana, the asta-kaliya-lila.

Since this is a long discussion, we will present it in parts. By reading this, one learns that the Padma Purana is the source book for famous asta-kaliya-lila granthas written by various Gaudiya Vaisnava acharyas in the 15th and 16th century. The famous Krishnaika Kaumudi, Govinda Lilamrta, and Krishna Bhavanamrta base their material on this Puranic authority.

Note: The following entries are unedited, presented as it is, downloaded from Net.

Srimati Vrinda-devi said, “O Naradaji, now I will describe Radha-Krishna’s asta-kaliya-lila beginning with nishanta-lila.

Nishanta lila 3:36-6 am.

O Narada, I shall also tell you the secret since you are a devotee of Krishna In Vrindavana which is charming and adorned with fifty bowers, in a chamber with divine gems, in an arbour of the desire-yielding tree, Radha Govinda Yugala embracing each other remain (in a) sleeping (position), though later Radha-Govinda are awakened by birds obeying my orders.

Radha-Govinda have obtained great joy due to a close embrace and are afraid of its being disturbed. Radha-Govinda do not at all desire to get up from the bed. Then Radha-Govinda have to get up from their bed when awakened with various notes made on all sides and repeatedly by groups of sarikas and parrots etc.

Seeing Radha-Madhava seated gladly on the bed, the friends enter (the bower) and offer the two service appropriate for that time. Then the two, having got up from the bed by the notes of sarikas, overcome with eagerness go to their respective houses.

Pratah Lila 6-8:36 a.m.

In the morning, Krishna, awakened by his mother, quickly gets up, and having with Baladeva brushed his teeth and being allowed by his mother, goes, being surrounded by his friends, to the cowstall.

O brahmana, Radha too, awakened by her friends, gets up from her bed, and having brushed her teeth would then smear her body with unctuous substances. Then Radharani goes to the quandrangular for bath. There Kishori is bathed by her friends.

(Then) Radha goes to the chamber for decoration, and there her friends decorate her with ornaments and various divine fragrant flowers and unguents. Then when, with effort, her friends request her mother-in-law and then Radhika is invited along with her friends by Yasoda to cook good food.

Narada said, “O Vrnda, how is it, O goddess, that Radha is invited by Yasoda to cook food, when there are foremost cooks like Rohini mata?”

Vrnda replied, “I have formerly heard from the mouth of Katyayani that in olden days she was granted a boon by Durvasa. And O great sage the boon was: ‘O respectable lady (Sri Radha), the food which is cooked by you, would be, as a result of my favour, sweet and vying with nectar, and would in the same way promote long life of the eater (of it).’

“Thus Narada, Yasoda, loving her son, every-day calls Radha to her home to cook Krishna’s breakfast. Yashoda is thinking, ‘my son, due to longing for sweet (food), would, (after eating it) live a long life.’

Allowed by her mother-in-law Jatila, Radha, being delighted, would go to the house of Nanda. Going there with the multitude of her friends she cooks there also. Krishna also, having milked the cows and having some others got milked by (other) men, comes home surrounded by his friends at the words (i.e. order) of his father.

Having smear-ed his body with unctuous substances and having had shampoo-ing and after being gladly bathed by servants, Shyama puts on washed garments, a garland, and has his body smeared with sandal.

With his neck and forehead shining due to the hair on his head separated and tied at two places, with the hair redden-ed by the dot on the forehead resembling the moon, and shining, with his hands delightfully glittering with jewelled bracelets, armlets, and bracelets worn on the upper arm, with his chest shining due to a pearl necklace, having put on ear-rings resembl-ing crocodiles.

Sri Krishna, holding the hand of his friend, and being followed by Baladeva, would enter the dining hall, after being again and again called by his mother. Then, surrounded by his friends and brother, making them laugh by means of (anecdotes etc. causing) laughter, and himself laughing with them, Gopala eats various kinds of food.

Having thus eaten (food), having sipped (water), having rested on a cot for a while, and distributing and chewing the tämbüla given by the servants.

Purvahna Lila 8:36-10:48 a.m.

Krishna, having put on the dress of a cowherd, with the flock of cows going ahead of him, followed on the path by all the residents of Vraja with love, having saluted his father and mother, and having sent back properly the host (following him) with a glance, would go to the forest. (Padma Purana, patalakhanda cp. 83.18-44) more in part two. Radha-Krishna asta-kaliya-lila ki jai! Sri Vrnda-devi ki jai! Narada Muni ki jai! Jaya Jaya Sri Radhe!

Shivaji Tells Manjari Sadhana part one ...... by Mahanidhi Madan Gopal Das

#Manjaris #Shiva #RaganugaBhakti #ManjariSvarupa #GopiBhava #BhaktiSadhana #Bhakti

The daily meditation upon one’s desired spiritual body i.e. siddha-deha or siddha svarupa is an ancient practice of sadhana originating in the Puranas.

Manjari svarupa meditation and asta-kaliya-lila smarana are not “concoctions” “newly invented practices” or the kalpana of some Radha-kunda babajis.

These two sadhanas are described in the Padma Purana, one of India’s oldest and most authentic scriptures. What follows is Lord Shiva’s answer to Narada Muni’s inquiry about how to practice raganuga sadhana bhakti.

“Shivaji said, ‘O Naradaji, once I met Sri Krishna in Vrindavana and Bhagavan taught me about Radha and how to attain Her eternal seva. At that time, Sri Krishna said, “’O Rudra, one who takes shelter of us (Radha-Krishna) or only My beloved Radhika and serves Radharani with unswerving devotion, he/she WILL COME TO ME!”’

Then Krishnaji said, “O Shiva, you should clearly know that My beloved Radhika is a great ista-devata, surrounded by hundreds and thousands of Her dearest girlfriends, the sakhis. My cows, gopas, gopis and this Vrindavana exist eternally. My Vrindavana is the place of unlimited bliss, so it is called “Ananda-kanda”. If one merely enters Vrajabhumi, they will never take rebirth again. Like Me,  Shivaji, you should always live in My Vraja!”

Narada replied, “O glorious Mahadeva, I am glad to hear this. Now please tell me how to practice raganuga sadhana.” (Padma Purana, patalakhanda cp. 82.73-88) More in part two.  Ananda kanda Bhagavan Sri Krishna ki jai! Ananda Vrindavana ki jai! Jaya Jaya Sri Radhe!

Sri Radha Kunda: The Ultimate Shelter .... by Mahanidhi Madan Gopal Das

ArrayadhaKunda ArrayloriesOfRadhaKunda Arrayhelter ArrayaganugaBhakti Arrayosvamis ArrayolyPlaces

After seeing many sacred places in India, and living many months each year for ten in the Dhamas of Navadvipa and Jagannatha Puri Dhama,

I genuinely feel that Radha-kunda is everything and Radha-kunda is my only shelter! Jai Jai Sri Radhe!

Such a feeling arises from association with and serving the sadhus staying in Sri Kunda, and surrendering to and praying to the books of Sri Raghunatha Dasa Goswami i.e. Stavavali.

The sacred words and teachings of Sri Raghunatha Dasa Goswami give the mentality to realize Radha-kunda; the vision to see Radha-kunda; and the heart to feel Radha-kunda. For Sri Radha-kunda is non-different from and one with Srimati Herself!

The determination to stay in Radha-kunda, despite all difficulties and opposition, will come by realizing the mercy packed in the following verse by Sri Raghunatha Dasa Goswami.

“O Lolakshi Radha! You and Your beloved Shyama forever dwell in Radha-kunda. Here only I will live and here alone I will stay!”

sva kundam tava lolakshi, sa priyayah sadas padam,

atraiva mama samvasa, ihaiva mama samsthitih (Vilapa Kusumanjali 97)

Regarding the shelter of Radha-kunda, in a very important quote Srila Prabhupada addresses every single devotee concerning doing bhajana in Radha-kunda. In fact, Srila Prabhupada glorifies the shelter of Radha-kunda as “THE ULTIMATE SHELTER”.

Srila Prabhupada said, “Everyone interested in Krishna consciousness should ultimately take shelter of Radha-kunda, and execute devotional service there throughout one’s life. This is the conclusion of Sri Rupa Gosvami.” (tika v. 10 Upadeshamrita)

To further glorify Radha-kunda and the principle of taking full shelter there, we offer the following prayers by Sri Raghunatha Dasa Goswami from Stavavali:

Sri Radha-kunda Ashtakam

1 VṚṢABHA DANUJA NĀŚĀN, NARMA DHARMOKTI RAṄGAIḤ

Radha-kunda—the abode of love for Sri Krishna, the moon of Vraja—is as dear to Shyama as Sri Radhika Herself, the crownjewel of sweet adolescent girls in Vraja, and which Krishna named after Radha. That very dear, beautiful and fragrant Radha-kunda is my only shelter!

Touring South India

Murari Gupta’s biography titled “Krishna Chaitanya Carita Maha Kavya” (1.15.11-12) and other books describe how Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu honored the brahmanas Gaya by drinking their foot water.

Srila Prabhupada described the pastime thus: “When Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu went to Gayä, accompanied by many of His disciples, He became sick on the way. He had such a high fever that He asked His students to bring water that had washed the feet of brähmaëas, and when they brought it the Lord drank it and was cured. Therefore everyone should respect the position of a brähmaëa, as indicated by Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu. Neither the Lord nor His followers displayed any disrespect to brähmaëas.The followers of the Lord must be prepared to offer brähmaëas all due respect. (Cc. 1.17.9 p.)

=Padma Purana Kriya-yoga-sara khanda cp 21Brahma said:

3-4. Of all the castes Brähmaëa is the most venerable per-son. Gifts should be given to him by men having devotion and faith. A brähmaëa is the resort of all deities. He is actually a god on the earth. He saves a giver in this ocean of the universe, which is difficult to cross.

The brähmaëa said:

5. O best god, you have declared brähmaëa to be the most respectable of all castes. But out of them (i.e. brähmaëas) who is the greatest? To whom is a gift given?

Brahma said:

6-8. O best Brähmaëa, all the brähmaëas are superior, and all are always respectable. But those brähmaëas who are spoilt by such blemishes as theft, so also our haters, are not respectable. So (gifts should) not be given to others. brähmaëas of bad con-duct are not respectable. çudras with their senses curbed are respectable. So also those who eat what is prohibited (are not to be honoured). Cows are supposed to be the mothers of people. O best Brähmaëa, I am now particularly telling the greatness of brähmaëas through affection for you. Listen to it attentively.

9-11. brähmaëas are respectable to kñatriyas, vaiçyas and ‘çudras. brähmaëas are respectable to one another, and brähmaëas are to be honoured. O best man, the life, sons, fame, wealth of him who would worship a brähmaëa looking upon him as Vishnu, increase. O Brähmaëa, Vishnu desires to cut off the head of that foolish man who hoards (wealth) on the earth.

12-15. O Jaimini(?), a wise man should not salute abrähmaëa who has flowers in his hand, who has water in his hand, who has (the idol of) a god in his hand, and whose body is smeared with oil. A wise man should not salute a brähmaëa who is in water, who is in a temple of a deity, whose mind is absorbed in medi-tation, and who is worshipping a deity. O best brähmaëa, a wise man should not salute a brähmaëa performing outside (i.e. morning) duties, who is taking his meal, so also a brähmaëa who is singing Samans. An intelligent man should not salute everyone ‘of the brähmaëas (separately) where many brähmaëas are pre-sent, O best brähmaëa.

16. He who would not salute (in return) abrähmaëa who has ‘devoutly saluted, should be known to be like a candala, and should never be saluted.

17. Parents saluted by their son, should not salute him (in return). All brähmaëas saluted by (other) brähmaëas, should salute them (in return).

18. The wise ones do not hate brähmaëas and cows who have committed faults. If through folly they hate, Vishnu is always angry with them.

19. Yama puts a needle into both the eyes of him who looks angrily at suppliants (and) brähmaëas.

20. O brähmaëa, Yama puts a heated iron rod into that mouth with which fools reproach (others).

21. In that house where a brähmaëa eats (food), Vishnu. himself (lives). So also all deities, manes and divine sages.

22-28. Yama quickly destroys all the sin in the body of him, the wise one, who would carry just a drop of water from the foot of a brähmaëa. All the holy places that exist in crores of worlds, exist in the right foot of a brähmaëa. He whose head is sprinkled with water from the feet of a brähmaëa, has bathed at all holy places and is initiated for all sacrifices. By carrying (on his head) the water from the foot of a Brähmaëa all his fierce sins like the murder of a Brähmaëa perish at once. By carrying (on the head) the water from the foot of a brähmaëa, all diseases like con-sumption, highly afflicting, perish instantly. The dead ancestors gratified by the water offered at the feet of a brähmaëa for the dead ancestors, live in heaven as long as the moon and the stars (exist). By a wise man who would worship a Brähmaëa’s feet with durvas after washing them, Vishnu, the lord of the world and. the best of all gods, is worshipped.

29-33. I am telling the truth (and) the truth (only). That mortal who would carry on his head the remains of the offering at the feet of brähmaëas, obtains eternal liberation. That best man who goes round a Brähmaëa while keeping him to his right, has gone round the earth with the seven islands. He who would give a fruit or a tambüla after wetting the feet of brähmaëas is free from a disease if he is ill, and from a sin if he is a sinner. One that is bound gets free from his bond on washing the feet of brähmaëas. By washing the feet of brähmaëas those women who have no children or whose children are dead, have many children and their children Live (long). O best brähmaëa, listen to the greatness (of the wetting of a brähmaëa’s feet) which re-moves all sins.

34a. I (shall) tell you in brief about (the importance of) wetting the feet of a Brähmaëa.

34b-46a. Formerly there was a brähmaëa named Bhadra-kriya, born in a pure family and highly devoted to worshipping Vishnu. He knew the Vedas, he was tranquil, and was highly devoted to his parents. He honoured guests; so also he honoured his kinsmen. Once that best brähmaëa, with his body smeared with oil, went, taking with him clothes used for bath-ing, to a lake to bathe (then). That best brähmaëa who knew all holy texts and who was engaged in the well-being of all people, having bathed made offerings to his dead ancestors in the proper manner. Having finished the bath-rite, and repeating Vishnu’s names, he came to his own house and was engrossed in worship-ping Vishnu. With very cold Water he washed both his feet. That brähmaëa who honoured (other) brähmaëas, who had washed his feet and hands, placed all utensils for the bath (of the deity). O best brähmaëa, to the region of the door came a dog that was tormented by the heat of the summer sun, resembling that of fire. He lay in the very cold water used by the brähmaëa for washing his feet. Due to the touch of the water used by the brähmaëa for washing his feet, the extremely sinful dog was freed from all sins committed during crores of existences.

Shiva’s Real Marriage ....... by Mahanidhi Madan Gopal Das

#ShivaRatri #MarriageOfShiva #LordShiva #ShivaVivaha

It is a widespread idea that Shiva Ratri is the day Sri Shivaji married Srimati Sri Parvati-devi. The Bengali yearly calendar, circulated in the millions, boldly proclaims: “Shiva Ratri, the day Lord Shiva married Parvati.”

However popular this idea is, it is not found in the sacred texts of India. To know the real facts regarding transcendence, divine personalities, and reality in general one must refer to three different sources of Vedic knowledge i.e. prasthana-traya.

1) Shruti Prasthana: (108 [major] Upanisads and Vedic mantras)

The Upanisads are the crown jewel of the Vedas, eternally existing as the sound incarnation of Bhagavan meant to bring (nishidati) one near (upa) the Absolute Truth. The wisdom of the Upanisads is called rahasya-vidya, secret knowledge, because one realizes it in the heart after receiving it from Sri Guru.

2) Nyaya Prasthana: (Vedanta-sutra)

3) Smrti Prasthana: (Gita, Mahabharata, Puranas)

Among the many Puranas (smrti-prasthana), the most comprehensive and authentic source of knowledge regarding Lord Shiva is the Shiva Purana.  Here we will fine the real marriage day of Shiva and the meaning of Shiva Ratri.

The Shiva Purana (chapter 9, vidya-sara “Rudra Samhita”) says that SHIVA RATRI IS THE PUJA DAY, when Sri Vishnu and Brahmaji performed the first worship of Lord Shiva. Once Sri Vishnu and Brahmaji came to Kailash Parvata to have darshana of Shivaji.

After waiting sometime, they suddenly saw an unlimitedly huge stambha (“Jyotira-linga”). Neither Vishnu nor Brahmaji could find the beginning or end of that linga. Then Lord Shiva personally manifested before them, and Vishnu and Brahmaji worshiped Shiva with pancha-upacaras, five puja items.

Feeling joyful with their puja, Shiva said, “I am very pleased by your worship. From now on this day will be called “Shiva Ratri”. I will be fully bless anyone who honors this day by worshiping me.” Thus began the tradition of worshiping Lord Shiva on Shiva Ratri.

Regarding the actual, true marriage date of Srimati Parvati and Lord Shiva, the Shiva Purana says, “They were married in Chaitra month (march-april) shukla trayodashi, which means the 13th day of the waxing moon.

We hope this information will increase everyone’s awareness and understanding of Lord Shiva, who is the best Lord Sri Krishna’s devotees, vaishnavanam yatha shambhuh [SB 12.13.16],  and one of the 12 authorities (mahajanas) of Vaisnava wisdom, svayambhur naradah shambhuh…[SB 6.3.20].

Seeing Your Self as Manjari..... by Mahanidhi Madan Gopal Das

#ManjariBhava #GopiBhava #ManjariMeditations #VrajaGopis #Radha-Krishna

After a sadhaka becomes established in one’s siddha svarupa, he/she will contemplate their personal forms, qualities and sevas while mentally remembering and serving within Radha-Madhava’s asta-kaliya-lila.

The following passages describing a manjari’s form, feelings, movements and services are very helpful in culturing the personna of a maidservant of Srimati Radharani. By reading these, one will see how dynamic, beautiful and exciting it will be when one attains prema, and enters Radha-Krishna pastimes to lovingly serve Them eternally in one’s siddha svarupa as Radhika’s kinkari.

Kishori’s manjari has a glistening, pleasing golden complexion and she abounds in honey sweetness. She is a fresh maiden adorned with jeweled necklaces and multicolored blouses.

Her arms are beautifully shaped like lotus stems and glorified with bracelets and jeweled armlets. Like a dangling vine, the manjari’s hairbraid hangs down to her captivating buttocks and its swinging movements enhance her beauty.

Radhika’s kinkari (manjari) has an enchantingly thin waist. A divine silk garment with artistic folds hangs down to her ankles. A fine cloth embroidered with flowers and leaves covers her hair and sides of her face.

A sweet shy smile plays upon her reddish lips. Her glances are light and playful, and her movements are extremely attractive. The amorous affairs of Radha-Madhava Yugala always excite her pure tender heart.

Among a manjari’s unlimited good qualities, humility and sweet behavior are foremost.Having been taught by Radharani herself, the manjari is expert in all arts.

Sri Radha’s manjaris are especially attractive due to wearing the Playful Pair’s prasadi malas, clothes  and ornaments. They also relish Radha and Krishna’s prasadi pan and betelnut. The expert manjari immediately knows what Radha wants just by a hint or a glance. Radha and Krishna are always very affectionate to Their manjaris.

She carries whatever is needed i.e. scents, water, cosmetics etc. for Radhe-Shyama’s nightly meetings. Radhika’s kinkari constantly tastes the madhura rasa arising from Sri Radha’s beautiful form, qualities and pastimes. By remembering Radhika’s intimate affairs with Shyama a manjari remains forever thrilled.

A manjari’s intense loving affection for Radharani keeps her continually submerged in a ocean of happiness. In all times, whether awake, dreaming or deeply asleep, Radha’s manjari desires nothing but Radha’s seva. A Radha kinkari knows nothing but Sri Radha sweet lotus feet.

As rivers rush to the sea, a manjari will run toward anything even remotely connected with Radha. A manjari will practically die if even a moment passes without Radha. As a shadow follows an object, Radhika’s kinkari are always beside Sri Radhathroughout the day and night. A manjari’s deep attachment to Radha immerses her in the boundless ocean of ecstatic love for Radha.

Sometimes when Srimati enjoys with Priyatama in a keli-kunja, Radha pulls the manjari onto the flower bed and under the sheets with Her. Ah ha! Just see the intimacy of these most fortunate Radha manjaris!

Not only the universe but even Shiva and Ananta Sesha are astonished by spectacular beauty of Radha’s footmaidens, the manjaris. Tasting the sevananda, the manjari often horripilates in ecstasy. The manjari’s bodily luster and loveliness are enchanting to everyone as she moves from place to place in her anxiety to nicely serve Radha.

The bodily effulgence of Radha’s kinkaris beautifies and enriches all ten directions. When she is privy to Priya-Priyatama’s secret love talks, the manjari feels the utmost happiness and satisfaction. The soothing, nectar-sweet words flowing from the lotus mouth of Srimati Radhika continually dance in waves of joy in the hearts of Her manjaris. (Vrindavana Mahimamrta 8.17-42)

Reject Guru? ...... by Mahanidhi Madan Gopal Das

#Guru #SpiritualMaster #Bhakti #Disciple #RejectingGuru

Sometimes a disciple may have to reject his/her Guru, move on and take another Guru.

Regarding this principle, I have counseled many sincere, pure-hearted Krishna bhaktas who feel unhappy, frustrated, dissatisfied, and spiritually suffocated in their Guru-Shishya relationships.

They are confused and stuck; not knowing how to get out or improve their spiritual lives. Hopefully, the light of the sastric knowledge provided herein will help such surrendered souls find their true mentor—the sad guru—and again smile with the satisfaction produced from serving and loving a real spiritual teacher.

Citing various Gaudiya Vaisnava scriptures, this article will give eleven reasons for rejecting a Guru and taking another.

BHAKTI SANDARBHA

Quoting from Mahabharata (5.178.24) and Narada Pancharatra (1.10.20) in Bhakti Sandarbha (anu. 238), Sri Jiva Goswami says a disciple can reject a Guru (parityago vidhiyate) who:

1. Gives irrational guidance ie. speaks against the conclusions of Srimad Bhagavatam and other Gaudiya Vaisnava scriptures.

2. Is proud

3. Cannot explain the difference between right and wrong i.e. gives improper guidance.

4. Starts following a wrong path (utpatha-pratipannasya) due to bad association or the Guru becomes addicted to sinful life.

5. Is envious or antagonistic toward other Vaisnavas (vaishnava-vidveshi cet parityajya, BS anu. 238)

Tika Bhakti Sandarbha 238:

“If due to envy, a Guru forbids his disciple to associate with or serve an advanced devotee, the disciple should humbly bow and ask the Guru to retract that prohibition.

“But if the Guru still forbids him, the disciple should just take shelter of Krishna and continue serving his Guru from a distance without abandoning him or behaving inimically toward him.

“If some instruction of Sri Guru is inconsistent with sastra, the disciple should leave his Guru’s association [and take association of a sastric Guru],  and serve his diksha Guru  only from a distance.

“If the Guru slanders or becomes hostile toward Vaisnavas, he is not qualified to be a Guru and should be abandoned immediately.

“A Guru attached to sense enjoyment, ignorant of right and wrong and deviated from the bhakti marga should be abandoned because he is not a Vaisnava.” (Guru Tattva Vijnana, Sri Ananta Dasji Maharaja)

UNIQUE REASON FOR REJECTING GURU:

6. Not satisfied with Guru.

This most amazing point is discussed by Sri Jiva Goswami in Bhakti Sandarbha (anu. 207.1-4). First Sri Jiva says one cannot reject his diksha Guru. And then he says, ‘Well, Yes you can reject your Guru in this particular circumstance’:

Sri Jiva Goswami said, “One may accept only one diksha Guru as described in (SB 11.3.48). The disciple is not allowed to reject his diksha Guru.

“However, IF ONE’S GURU IS NOT SATISFACTORY,

ONE SHOULD REJECT HIM

AND ACCEPT ANOTHER GURU, tad-aparitoshenapy anyo guruh kriyate tat aneka guru karane purva-tyaga eva siddhah. In this way one may reject many (aneka) unsatisfactory spiritual masters.”

The key word here is apari toshen which means “dissatisfied or displeased with” one’s Guru. However, one must understand that rejecting a Guru is a serious matter.

It should only be done after deep deliberation and personal realization, discussion with learned devotees, and meeting with one’s Guru if possible.

Here Sri Jiva Goswami gives what seems like a simple, innocent reason for leaving one’s Guru; just plain dissatisfaction.

For many different reasons, excluding the serious one’s mentioned above, a disciple may just not feel happy about his Guru, his spiritual progress, future prospects, and his life in general in relation with a particular Guru.

If that’s so, then it’s time to move on and accept another Guru. Acharyas say that when one receives a new diksha from another Guru, then the prior Guru’s diksha and relationship are automatically cancelled without incurring any aparadha, offense or negative reaction.

In this regard, one Guru commented after giving diksa to two unsatisfied disciples of a another Guru, “If it’s not working out—it is not working out. You just have to move on to make spiritual progress.”

Continuing with quotations regarding rejecting the Guru who:

HARI BHAKTI VILASA

In Hari Bhakti Vilasa, Sri Sanatana Goswami says a disciple may reject a Guru who:

7. Is unqualified due to poor shastric knowledge, and thus incapable of answering a disciple’s questions on sastra which leaves the disciple doubtful and unsatisfied.

KRISHNA BHAJANAMRITA

In Krishna Bhajanamrita (v. 17-18), Sri Narahari Sarakara Thakura (an eternal associate of Gaura-Govinda), says a disciple may reject a Guru who:

8. Is ignorant about the position of Krishna and has misconceptions about the truth.

9. Does not accept Krishna’s pastimes, imitates Krishna or calls himself God.

JAIVA DHARMA

In Jaiva Dharma (chapter 20), Sri Bhaktivinoda Thakura says a disciple can reject a Guru who:

10. Opposes Vaiṣṇava philosophy and practice.

11. Was prematurely accepted without careful examination. And as a result, the disciple sees that all his sadhana efforts are not producing the desired result.

According to sastra, a disciple may reject a Guru who meets the above criterion without seeking his permission or agreement. The Guru and disciple may also part company by mutual consent and thus dissolve their relationship.

A genuine Guru always desires the best for his disciple, and thus he will not block or prevent the disciple’s spiritual progress. But rather Sri Guru will compassionately bless the disciple in his/her forward march to the lotus feet of Radha Govinda Yugala.

Conclusion:

The Vedas describe that for various good reasons, including personal dissatisfaction, disciples have been rejecting their Gurus for millions of years!

The Puranas, Mahabharata, Srimad Bhagavatam, Sandarbhas and Gaudiya Vaisnava acharyas discuss the unfortunate condition wherein a disciple must abandon, leave or reject a Guru.

The Bhagavatam Eight Canto describes how Bali Maharaja rejected his Guru, Shukracarya, because Guruji preached against Sri Vishnu in the form of Vamanadeva.  Thus rejecting the Guru is not a new practice. Sometimes it must be done in order to save one’s spiritual life. Again, I repeat this is a grave matter not to be taken lightly.

Deep thought, sastric study, counsel of the wise, personal realization, and intense prayers to Sri Krishna will give the guidance and direction a sincere devotee needs to carry on in progressive, happy, and successful Krishna consciousness.

Sad Guru ki jai! Happy, fulfilled and enlivened disciples ki jai! Jaya Jaya Sri Radhe!

Radha-Govinda Hear Our Prayers...... by Mahanidhi Madan Gopal Das

#Prayers #Vandanam #Radha-Krishna #Bhakti #Bhajana #CryingForKrishna

Devotees often doubt, “Krishna is so far away enjoying His sweet lilas in Goloka Vrndavana, so how can Krishna  possibly hear the prayers of little old me?”

Sastras often describe how Krishna hears the cries, pleas or prayers of His devotees, even though He may be hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away. Here’s some evidence from Gita and Bhagavatam.

1. 9.16.14: After Jamadagni was slain, his wife Renuka cried for her powerful son Parasurama. Though he was far away, he heard (upasrutya durasthah) his mom’s crying and immediately went there.

10.28.3 At five a.m., when Nanda Baba got kidnapped by Varuna’s servants and taken under the Yamuna, the cowherd men cried out to Krishna. Although Krishna was forty kilometers away, Krishna heard and immediately went there, bhagavams tad upashrtuta, tad-antikam gato.

Tika Sri Jiva Goswami: Though the cowherd men shouted from far away, Krishna heard the shouts as if close by (upashrutya).

Tika Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti:  Though Krishna was far away sleeping on His bed of flowers [in a kunja with Radhika: Nisha-lila], Krishna heard the cowherd men shouting “Krishna! Rama!” How is this possible? Because Krishna is all-pervading, Krishna is always very near to everyone. Understanding the situation, Krishna rushed there, jumped into the water to save  Nanda Baba.

Mahabharata: One afternoon, while Rani Draupadi and the Pandavas were exiled in Kamvan Vraja, Durvasa Muni showed up with 60 K hungry disciples. The sage asked Draupadi to feed them all, which would be possible by the power of her “akshaya patra”, a pot which can feed everyone without limit.

However, once the pot has been used, it could not be used again that day. Anxious and afraid, Draupadi anguishly cried, O Krishna, O Bhagavan, please save me!”

Krishna heard (upasrutya, as if near),  immediately crossed the 120 km. distance between Indraprastha and Kamvan, ate a few crumbs from the used pot, and all bellies became full. A miracle of hearing followed by a miraculous deed.

Gita: 13.14  “Everywhere are Krishna’s hands and legs, His eyes, heads and faces, and Krishna has ears everywhere. In this way the Supersoul exists, pervading everything, sarvatah pani padam tat, sarvatah akshi shiro mukham, sarvataù shruti-mal loke, sarvam avrtya tishthati.”

Acharyas say that not only does this verse describe the Antaryami, Paramatma feature, it also describes the Bhagavan feature of the Personality of Godhead, Bhagavan Sri Krishna.

How so? It is Krishna only whose hands (sarvatah pani) reach out anywhere and everywhere to accept the offerings of His bhaktas.

In Gopala Champu, Sri Jiva Goswami describes how Giridhari Sri Krishna reached His long hungry hands from Govardhana all the way to kitchens in Nandagram to eat bhoga offerings which were forgotten by the Vrajavasis in their haste to run to Giriraja.

On His feet only (padam tat), Krishna goes wherever His bhaktas offer dandavats, and He stands there to accept them.

Wherever Krishna’s bhaktas chant, sing or pray to Him, Krishna hears them (sarvatah shruti-mal loke). And with His big beautiful blue lotus eyes (sarvatah akshi shiro mukham), Krishna enjoys watching His devotees serve Him in different ways.

Srila Prabhupada tika: In this verse (Gita 13.14), Krishna says, He has His hands and legs everywhere. Wherever Krishna will order, the things [we need] will come. Simply we have to become sincere; then everything is there. (730838SB.LON)

Conclusion: Yes, my friends, Radha Govinda DO HEAR YOUR PRAYERS, and respond immediately and lovingly.

Please everyone have faith and keep praying and crying. Be sure that one fine beautiful day, you will open your tear-filled eyes and see…

Radha Govinda smiling at you in bliss!

Praying for mercy ki jai! Krishna is right here ki jai! Jaya Jaya Sri Radhe!

O, How Glorious are Devotees!...... by Mahanidhi Madan Gopal Das

#Devotees #Vaisnavas #VaisnavaBehavior #FootWater

In the last article, we heard about the glories of brahmanas.

Here Sri Narottama Dasa Thakura reminds us of the power and position of the saintly devotees of Bhagavan Sri Krishna. May we always be blessed with the darshana, sanga and seva of the wish-fulfilling angels of mercy gracing this gloomy world in the form of Krishna bhaktas, the Vaisnavas.

“The lotus feet of the saintly Vaisnavas are the greatest wealth in this world. O my dear brothers! Please listen attentively. One who takes shelter of the Vaisnava and worships Krishna is never forsaken by Krishna. Others die without reason.

“The water that has washed the feet of a Vaisnava gives divine strength to a person engaged in loving devotional service. Nothing else is more powerful than this. The dust of the feet of the Vaisnavas upon my head is the only decoration needed at the time of death.

“The Puranas and bhakti discourses often mention the  purifying power of tirtha jal. However, the water from the feet of a Vaisnava far surpasses the benedictory power of such sacared water. In fact, all of one’s desires are fulfilled by taking the water from the feet of a Vaisnava.

“One experiences great bliss in associating with Vaisnavas discussing hari-katha. Becoming impatient due to forgetfulness of Krishna, Narottama dasa thus laments. (Prarthana 5.44)

Puppets of Mercy .... by Mahanidhi Madan Gopal Das

#Devotees #Krishna #Action #DevotionalService #Bhakti

Throughout Gita and other sastras, Bhagavan Sri Krishna asserts that, “I am the doer (via gunas & prakrti), I give results, I give knowledge, I give intelligence, I give memory, I give ability, I give strength, and I give Myself to whom I choose!”

Thus the question arises, “Are we chanting Hare Krishna by our own will or power, or is Krishna allowing us to chant, and chanting through us by His will?” Let’s find out the answer…

In the Srimad Bhagavatam, the great chiran jiva and mahajana Markandeya Rishi says that Bhagavan Sri Krishna is the Supreme Person and force behind every movement of every embodied soul from the celestials Brahmaji and Shivaji to the the devotees on earth. It is Sri Krishna alone who makes the vital air, the mind, the senses and the power of speech move and act.

Sri Markandeya Rishi said, “O Almighty Lord Narayana! How can I possibly describe You? For it is You who moves the vital air, which impels the mind, senses and power of speech to act. This is true for all embodied souls including Brahma and Shiva and even me. Still, you become the intimate friend of those who worship you, bhajatam asi bhava bandhu.” (SB 10. 12.8.40)”

In Bhakti-sandarbha (144), Sri Jiva Goswami says, “The significance of Bhagavan Sri Krishna being referred to as bhava-bandhu (verse above) is that even devotees have no independent power to serve Sri Krishna.

“But since Sri Krishna is the friend of His devotees, Krishna gives them the bhava i.e. bhakti so they can serve Him. Furthermore, the speech and other senses with which the devotees serve Krishna are also impelled by Him. Thus, the devotee is like a wooden puppet moved by the strings of the puppeteer.”

Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti tika: “Like a loving friend (bhava-bandhu), You my Lord are controlled by the love of those who worship You. It is You alone who enable Your devotees to worship You by enlivening their minds and senses.

“Nevertheless,  You feel incapable of repaying the debt of their worship. Thus You become indebted and controlled by their love. That is most astonishing. That is the greatness of Your mercy.“

Conclusion:

Devotees are chanting japa and kirtana because the Holy Name, which is non-different from Sri Krishna, allows them to chant it. Not only does Bhagavan Sri Krishna allow us to and empower us to chant His sweeter than sweet Holy Names, but Sri Krishna even allows animals to chant Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

King Bharata as a deer chanted “Hari Narayana” at death by the inconceivable mercy of bhava bandhu Sri Krishna. (SB 5.14.45)  The elephant king Gajendra, formerly King Indradyumna, by the loving mercy of Bhagavan Sri Krishna, chanted mantra japa when leaving his beastly body. (SB 8.3.1.)

So Sri Krishna’s Holy Names are not acutally “chanted by us”. Rather by His independent mercy, Sri Krishna ALLOWS His Holy Names to descend into the mind of the surrendered devotee and manifest in their ears and mouths.

The sastras and tikas revealed CLEARLY SHOW US that not only our chanting, but also all our sadhana is NOT DONE BY US. Sri Krishna is doing it all!

The mind remembers Sri Krishna’s form, qualities and pastimes, the senses act in Shyama’s seva, and the mouth chants Hare Krishna in japa and kirtana—ALL BEING MOVED AND ACTIVATED BY SRI KRISHNA HIMSELF!

In summary, we can now see that all movement on the bhakti-marga, be it progressive, digressive or stalled is fully inspired, controlled and permitted by the will of OUR LOVING FRIEND, dina bandhu Sri Krishna. Always pray for Sri Krishna’s mercy and power, so by His sweet will we can lovingly serve Him, and one day attain perfection in prema dhama Sri Vrindavana. (adapted madangopal.blog)

No free will ki jai! Sri Krishna’s loving mercy ki jai! Jaya Jaya Sri Radhe!

Manjari Sadhana Sutras ...... by Mahanidhi Madan Gopal Das

#RagaBhakti #ManjariSadhana #GopiBhava #Smarana #Gopis #Radha-Krishna

In Prema Bhakti Candrika, Narottama dasa Thakura describes the five essential practices of manjari-bhava sadhana.

By performing sadhana according these sutras, the raganuga sadhaka will to attain madhurya-prema in the mood of Shyama’s sweethearts, the sakhis.

Thakura Mahashaya’s sutras include four of the nine limbs of bhakti-sadhana:

1) Sravanam; 2) Kirtanam; 3) Smaranam; and 4) Vandanam.

He added a special fifth practice which he calls Darshana.

This concise sadhana package describes five limbs of bhakti covering nine individual daily practices. If one regularly follows this, one will quickly obtain the coveted treasure of Radha-Krishna’s eternal prema seva in his/her manjari svarupa i.e. siddha deha.

The Manjari-bhava Sadhana Sutras

I. HEARING (sravanam)

1. Become emotionally attached to reading and hearing about the amorous affairs of Radha Govinda Yugala: rati prema maya parabandhe. (v. 60)

2. Constantly hear devotees chanting the names and attributes of Radha-Krishna: donhaara nama guna shuni, bhakta mukhe puni puni. ( v. 76)

II. CHANTING (kirtanam)

3. Cultivate the rasa-filled names of Radha-Krishna: krishna nama radha nama upaya rasa dhaama. ( v. 60)

Identity of a Radha Dasi..... by Mahanidhi Madan Gopal Das

#Manjaris #Radharani #GopiIdentity #PerfectMentality #RaganugaBhakti #ManjariBhava #Sadhana

Abhimana means means the mentality, attitude, thought, self-conception, inner feeling, or the innate sense of knowing who or what I am and what I want. Abhimana can be either material or spiritual.

A basic spiritual spiritual abhimana is having the self-conceit and feeling that I am Krishna’s eternal servant. A more developed sense of abhimana will give one the idea that I am an eternal maidservant of Srimati Radharani.

For example, a genuine devotee with shishya-abhimana, the attitude of a disciple, will think, “For time eternal I will lovingly serve my Gurudeva. In this world, Gurudeva is my only true friend, wisdom guide, companion and ever-well wisher. Gurudeva is very dear to Sri Sri Radha Govinda and Their sakhis and manjaris. I pray to be eternally engaged in the seva of my Guru’s lotus feet.”

For a raganuga bhakta the best example of spiritual abhimana is Sri Raghunatha dasa Gosvami was who fully immersed in the abhimana or self-conceit of identifiying as Radhika’s manjari.

Wetting the vraja-dhuli with his tears of separation, Dasa Goswami continually lamented in separation from his Swamini while praying, “O Radhika, I have nothing and no one but You. You are my everything and I am Your dasi. Although I am totally insignifcant, please know it clearly that I am Yours, I am Yours!”

Here’s a wonderful example of transcendental abhimana in the kingdom of Vrindavana. One day after Krishna left Vraja, a clever sakhi, noticing the blossoming beauty of her younger sister, spoke to her in a private place just to test her: “O sakhi, our Krishna has now left Vrindavana. I see that your youthful beauty and other qualities are now developing. And Vraja is full of handsome dashing young lads. So if you want to marry one, just whisper your preference and I’ll make all arrangements.”

“What are you saying?” said the youthful kishori. “Surely there are millions of talented and qualified young men in this world. But I don’t care! If a young man does not have a mor mukuta, a murali, and mineral powders adorning his form then he is as insignificant as a piece of straw, and I could care less.” This is the abhimana of a kishori gopi.

The bhava and thoughts we cultivate and the sevas we meditate upon during sadhana will be attained at the stage of perfection. A raganuga bhakta should  continually meditate on being Radha’s kinkari, loyal loving servant.

The following prayer of Sri Prabodhananda Sarasvati shows the intimacy and sweetness of having sakhi abhimana and being close to Priyaji: “When will I eternally live with Kishori jeu and serve Her in various clever ways while wearing Radha’s cloth and bodice that She lovingly gave me with Her own hands, prasadam svaminyah svakara-tala-dattam pranayatah?” (RRSNidhi 53)

In this regard, Sri Narottama Dasa Thakura gives very clear advice on how to cultivate spiritual abhimana in raganuga bhakti.

One aspiring for manjari bhava on the path of raga should think, feel and hanker like this: “I will follow the manjaris of Radhika, and by their mercy I will blissfully serve Radha-Krishna in the kunjas of Vrindavana. Just by seeing the gestures of my guru sakhi or Tulasi-manjari, I will understand what seva is required for the pleasure of Lila Yugala.

“I will immerse my mind and heart in the beauty, charm and sweetness of Radha Govinda Yugala. I will live amongst Their intimate sakhis and serve Radha and Krishna with all my heart throughout the day and night. No matter what happens to me, I will always meditate upon and serve Radha-Krishna.

“By Their mercy, I will eventually realize and see the siddha deha upon which I was meditating on during my sadhana. It is only a matter of time. For what is now unripe during my sadhana will fully ripen when I attain the stage of prema. This is the way of bhajana for those treading the path of raga. (Prema-bhakti-candrika 53-58)

The mature sadhaka, by the grace of Sri Guru, will be introduced to his eternal identity (nitya-abhimana). Then that fortunate sadhaka will start identifying with his/her siddha svarupa, the eternal love-saturated spiritual body.

By regularly contemplating that siddha deha and mentally serving Radha and Krishna in that form, the sadhaka will one day have the crystal clear realization that, “I am nothing but a servant of the servants of the servants of Srimati Radharani, radha dasi dasi anudas!

What could be more fascinating and wonderful than thinking that someday I will become a most trusted, confidential serving girl of Srimati Radharani. May everyone someday receive this great treasure of possessing the pure abhimana of a being Radha’s eternal servant.

Krishna: His Age In Lilas ...... by Mahanidhi Madan Gopal Das

#KrishnaLila #PastimesOfKrishna #AgeOfKrishna #SrimadBhagavatam #VrindavanLila #Bhakti #Krishna

Bhagavan Sri Krishna is a blissful, carefree, playful, naughty and romantic eternally dazzling youth of sweet sixteen.

Srimad Bhagavatam (10.55.28) describes how the Dvaraka queens of Krishna became bashful, and hid themselves here and there upon seeing the teenaged Pradyumna (Krishna’s son) whom they mistook to be their husband Sri Krishna.

Sri Jiva Goswami said, “Sri Krishna does not age beyond the kaishora period (ages 10-16).” (tika: SB 10.45.3) To be exact, the 19th century Gaudiya Vaisnava acharya Siddha Krishnadasa Tatapada said, “Bhagavan Sri Krishna’s eternal age is 15 years, 9 months, seven and a half days!”

In an amazing Bhagavata tika (SB 10.45.3), Gaudiya Vaisnava mahajana Sri Jiva Goswami reveals the exact age of Sri Krishna during some of His spectacular pastimes. To please the ears and hearts of our devoted friends, we offer the following:

AGE 7:

Summer, Sri Krishna killed Pralambasura.

AGE 8:

Ashvina Month (Sept-Oct); Sri Krishna played flute.

Karttika Month (Oct-Nov); Sri Krishna lifted Mount Govardhana (although Vrajavasis there exclaimed that Krishna was only seven years old).

Karttika sukla ekadashi: Indra and Surabhi bathed Sri Krishna and gave name “Govinda”.

Karttika sukla dvadashi: Sri Krishna went to Varuna’s kingdom to rescue Nanda Baba.

Karttika Purnima: Sri Krishna immersed His Vrajavasis devotees in the lake Brahma-hrada to show them the spiritual realm and Krishnaloka.

Karttika Mrgashirsha month: During the winter season, Sri Krishna stole the Vraja kanyas clothing.

Next summer: In the summer of his eighth year, Sri Krishna gave mercy to the Yajna patnis, wives of the brahmanas.

AGE 9:

Ashvina month (autumn, sharada season) In his ninth year, Sri Krishna enjoyed the rasa dance.

Phalguna month: (Krishna caturdashi, Shiva Ratri) Krishna went to Ambikä-vana in Vraja to rescue Nanda Baba from snake.

Phalguna Holi Purnima: Krishna kills Shankhacuda.

AGE 10:

In his tenth year, Sri Krishna performed pastimes as He pleased.

AGE 11:

Caitra Month: (march-april) On Purnima, Krishna killed Arishtasura [and also manifested Radha-kunda] [Krishna’s “running age” although was still age 10]

Year later, Sri Krishna killed Keshi, last demond killed in Vraja, on Phalguna sukla dwadasi. On Trayodashi, Uncle Akrura took Krishnaji to Mathura. The next day on  Phalguna chaturdashi, Sri Krishna killed Kamsa. Once Krishna enters His kaishora period, He does not age beyond that.

Nitya nava-yauvanam, saundarya swarupam Bhagavan Sri Krishna ki jai! Jaya Jaya Sri Radhe!

Gopi Bhava Gives Gopi Body ...... by Mahanidhi Madan Gopal Das

#MahaprabhuTeachings #RaganugaBhakti #GopiBhava

To Vyenkatta Bhatta, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu once taught the essence of raganuga bhakti sadhana.

In summary, Mahaprabhu said: 1) worship Vrndavana Sri Krishna with vraja-bhava, the loving moods of the eternal Vrajavasis; 2) perform the bhajana of cultivating gopi-bhava, following the example of the Vraja-gopis;

3) Then you will attain birth in Bhauma Vrndavana with the bhava (that you  cultivated), and there receive the siddha-deha of a gopi to eternally serve Sri Krishna in madhurya-rasa.

Let’s examine the verses Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu spoke to explain these points:

First, Sri Caitanya Deva said one must do bhajana in vraja-bhava, the loving mood of Sri Krishna’s eternal associates in Sri Dhama Vrndavana:

vraja-lokera bhäve yei karaye bhajana

sei jana päya vraje vrajendra-nandana

“Sri Caitanya Deva told Vyenkatta Bhatta, “Anyone who performs bhajana in vraja-bhava (the ecstasy of the Vrajavasis), will attain Vrajendranandana Sri Krishna in Vraja Dhama.” (Cc. 2.9.131)

Sri Caitanya Deva then cited an example from the Puranas to prove His point. Mahaprabhu said that the Personified Vedas adopted the mood of vraja-bhava in their bhajana, following the example of the damsels of Vraja:

çruti-gaëa gopé-gaëera anugata haïä

laïä vrajeçvaré-suta bhaje gopé-bhäva laïä

“The Pesonified Vedas (çruti-gaëas) worshiped Yasodanandana with the feelings of the gopis (gopi-bhava bhajana), and followed in their footsteps (gopi-anugatya).” (Cc. 2.9.133)

After many many years of cultivating gopi-bhava, the loving moods and sentiments of the gopis, the çruti-gaëa attained perfection in their raganuga-sadhana and took birth as gopis in Bhauma Vrndavana during Radha-Krishna’s pastimes.

Mahaprabhu explains this point saying how the Srutis Personified, upon entering Bhauma Vrndavana, attained both the bhava, which they had been cultivating, and a suitable spiritual body (gopi-deha) as a gopi to dance with Gopinatha in the rasa dance.

It is significant that even without knowing or having their siddha-dehas, the personified Vedas  performed gopi-bhava vraja-bhajana.

And they received their spiritual bodies (i.e. siddha-deha or gopi-deha) only after leaving their material bodies and taking birth in Bhauma Vrndavana.

bähyäntare gopé-deha vraje yabe päila

sei dehe Krishna-saìge räsa-kréòä kaila

Sri Caitanya Deva said, “The Personified Vedas acquired bodies like those of the gopés (antare: internal bhava; bahya: external form), and took birth in Vrajabhümi. In their gopi bodies they got the association of Sri Krishna in the rasa dance.” (Cc. 2.9.134)

Gopi bhava gives gopi siddha deha ki jai! Jaya Jaya Sri Radhe!

Follow Yugala’s Daily Lilas ....... by Mahanidhi Madan Gopal Das

#RadhaKrishnaPastimes #AstaKaliyaLila #RadhaKrishna #KrishnaPastimes

We think, speak and do so many things each day. But how often do we reflect on the sweet Vraja madhurya-lilas of Radha Govinda Yugala?

For those treading the sacred path of heart-inspired bhakti, remembering Radha-Krishna throughout the day is essential. We must regularly pause to think of Radha and Krishna—where are They right now and what are Radha-Madhava doing?

Sri Rupa Gosvamipada has nicely summarized the sweet daily pastimes of Radha Govinda Yugala [asta-kaliya lila] in only eight verses. Please store these verses on your phone or print them.

Then time-to-time through the day read the verses and fix your heart in Vraja dhama and Lila Yugala Radhe-Shyama’s blissful pastimes. Within a short time you can memorize them, and then mentally tune into the joyful world of sweet lila whenever your heart turns in that direction. Jaya Jaya Sri Radhe!

Radha Govinda Yugala Asta-kaliya-lila

Nishanta Lila: Dawn Pastimes (3.24—6 a.m.)

I remember Radha and Krishna at night’s end, being awakened by the variegated songs of the parrots sent by Vrnda devi. With both pleasant and unpleasant poems the parrots inspire Yugala to rise from Their pleasure-bed.

The sakhis joyfully observe how Radha-Krishna are fatigued from from Their loving pastimes. Hearing the pinching words of the old she-monkey named Kakkhati, Radha-Madhava become afraid. And though They are still thirsty for more pastimes, Radha-Govinda scurry off to Their individual homes and go to sleep.

Pratah Lila: Morning Pastimes (6—8.24 a.m.)

In the morning, I take shelter of Sri Radha who is bathed and decorated by Her sakhis, and then goes to Nandagrama to cook for Krishna on the request of Vrajeshvari Yashoda. After cooking, Radhika eats Krishna’s prasadi. I also take shelter of Sri Krishna, who wakes, milks the cows, bathes and eats along with His friends.

Purvahna Lila: Pastimes at Forenoon (8.24—10.48 a.m.)

In the forenoon, I remember Sri Krishna going to the forest with His cows and friends while being followed by the Vrajavasis. Later in the morning, Krishna goes to the bank of Radha-kunda, eager to meet Sri Radha.

I also remember Sri Radha being ordered by Her elder Jatila to go worship Suryadeva. Anxious to hear about Krishna, Radhika sends Her sakhis to look for Krishna. Hoping for some good news, Radharani casts Her eyes down the road searching for the returning sakhis.

Madhyahna Lila: Midday Pastimes (10.48 a.m.—3.36 p.m.)

I remember Radha and Krishna at midday, overwhelmed by desire and enchanted by various ornament-like physical transformations of ecstasy arising out of meeting each other, yet being anxious due to shyness and eagerness, and being served by Their attendants.

The joking words of Lalita and other sakhis please Radha-Madhava as They perform a Kandarpa Yajna, enjoy Jhulana, Vana-Vihara, and Jala-keli in Radha-kunda, quarrel over Krishna’s stolen flute, enjoy conjugal pastimes, drink honey-wine, worship the sun god and enjoy other sports.

Aparahna Lila: Afternoon pastimes (3.36—6.00 p.m.)

In the afternoon, I remember Sri Radha returning home and cooking different dishes for Her beloved Krishna. Radha bathes, dresses nicely and is filled with joy upon seeing Her lover’s lotuslike face.

I also remember Sri Krishna returning home with His cows and friends. Krishna feels pleased upon seeing, and later being fondled by Maa Yashoda when He meets His parents.

Sayahna Lila: Evening pastimes (6.00—8.24 p.m.)

In the evening, I remember Sri Radha sending many eatables to Krishna’s home through a sakhi. Later Radhika eats Vrajachandra’s prasadi brought by a sakhi.

At this time, I also remember Sri Krishna being nicely bathed, beautifully dressed and fondled by Maa Yashoda. Then Krishna milks some cows and returns to the palace to eat.

Pradosh Lila: Pastimes at Nightfall (8.24—10.48 p.m.)

At nightfall, I remember Sri Radha being dressed by Her sakhis in either white or dark clothes according to the moon’s luminosity. On Vrinda’s indication, Radhika and some of Her messengers go to meet Krishna in a desire tree grove in Vrindavana.

I also remember Sri Krishna, who witnesses artful games in the assembly of cowherders before His affectionate mother carefully takes Him to bed. Shortly later, Krishna slips away to go to solitary grove to meet Radhika.

Nakta Lila: Night Pastimes (10.48 p.m.—3.36 a.m.)

In the night, I remember Radha and Krishna, who are intensely eager to meet and being attended by Vrinda in many ways. Radhe-Shyama and Their priya-sakhis play, sing and dance in the forest. After enjoying many pastimes, Radha Govinda Yugala sleep on a nice flowerbed, being attended by Their loving sakhis.

Alternate reading: At night, I remember Radha and Krishna meeting together and being worshipped by Vrinda with various items. Lila Yugala Radha-Madhava enjoy joking riddles, sweet talks, plays and Rasa and Lasya dances with Their dearest sakhis. Radha-Madhava drink honeywine, and master various kinds of ever-increasing conjugal bliss in the nikunja.

Radha-Madhava nitya-lila smarana ki jai! Jaya Jaya Sri Radhe!

Expert Means Do It Nicely ..... by Mahanidhi Madan Gopal Das

#DevoteeBehavior #KrishnaBhakta #QualitiesOfADevotee #DevotionalService

One day Sri Chaitanyadeva sat with Sri Sanatana Goswami and told him about the 26 qualities of a Vaisnava. (Cc. 2.22.78-80) Mahaprabhu mentioned daksha, being expert, as one of them.

In Bhagavad-gita (12.16), Sri Krishna said, “My Priya bhakta is expert, daksha mad bhakta priya.” In the tikas to this verse, Sridhara Swami says daksha means a devotee is not lazy. Sri Baladeva Vidyabhushana says a devotee is expert in discussing and understanding shastra, and Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti is mum.

Often when preaching to his disciples, Srila Prabhupada said or wrote, “A devotee is expert in all things.”But what exactly does it mean that a devotee is “expert”?

Due to the limitations of one’s individual karma and culture, it is next to impossible for any one person to be “expert in everything.” Srila Prabhupada’s statements about being expert are meant to insure quality and precision in all sevas offered to Radha Govinda Yugala.

So being expert means trying always to improve the quality and devotional content of every service you render for the pleasure of Sri Hari, Sri Guru and the Vaisnavas. Being expert means being attentive, careful, caring and on time. One becomes expert in anything by prayer, practice, association, study, and most importantly by the mercy and sanction of Bhagavan Sri Krishna.

A simple, sincere, pure-hearted devotee should not, due to his limitations, feel bad or inferior, thinking, “O, I am not a good devotee because I can’t do many things. All I can do is chant Hare Krishna, read about Krishna and worship Krishna. I don’t know cooking, singing, preaching, playing mrdanga and harmonioum. In fact, I can’t even play karatals!”

Don’t worry, you are perfectly fine! In fact, you are an “expert devotee” and what could be better than that. In Gita (18.65), Krishna says, “I promise you that you will attain pure love for Me and perfection in human life if you simply always think of, worship and bow down to Me!”

In the following passage, giving a more liberal explanation of the term “expert”,Srila Prabhupada acknowledgesthat devotees do have their limitations and personal abilities. No one is perfect but Bhagavan Sri Krishna. And this definiton will suit most all classes and enable everyone to become an “expert” in devotional service.

Srila Prabhupada said, “Expert means whatever he is doing, he must do it very nicely to his best knowledge.  To your best talent and capacity, try to finish it very nicely, whatever it may be.

“If you think that you are unable to do that work, then whatever work you can do, you take. But do it nicely. That is expert. Don't imitate, [thinking] ‘Oh, I have no capacity to work in that way, but I want to imitate. Oh, he is doing that. I shall do that.’ Don't do that. That is not expert. You take up what you can do very nicely and do it nicely.

“Just like Arjuna, he was not a Vedantist, a brahmana or a  sannyasi. He was householder military man. But he knew his business, how to do it nicely. So you do your business nicely. That is expert. Do it nicely and Krishna is satisfied. And that is your success.” (BBT folio 680716rc.mon)

Be in expert for Sri Krishna ki jai! Jaya Jaya Sri Radhe!

The Eight Puja Flowers ...... by Mahanidhi Madan Gopal Das

#Puja #FlowerOfferings #KrishnaWorship #Archanam #Bhakti #Worship

Every day, Krishna bhaktas offer their Thakurajis love-soaked bhoga; colorful hand-stitched clothes and turbans; dhoop, deep, scents, perfumes and fragrant flowers.

When describing the bhakti-anga of archanam (Deity puja), Narada Muni said, “Vishnu/Krishna is PLEASED ONLY WHEN worshiped with the following eight flowers. Of course, the offering of external flowers also pleases Vishnu/Krishna.”

“What is the offering of eight flowers that especially pleases Vishnu/Krishna?

The Eight Flowers

1. Harmlessness

2. Control of the senses

3. Compassion to all living entities

4. Forgiveness

5. Tranquility

6. Discipline

7. Meditation

8. Truth

External flowers are relatively easy to procure, to offer singly or to string into garlands for Thakuraji’s pleasure. According to Narada Muni presentation here it seems that Krishna accepts external flowers to uphold His Gita proclamation—“I accept/eat leaves, flowers and fruits, patram pushpam, phalam ashnami”. (Bg. 9.26)

However, Naradji STRESSES HERE that “Vishnu/Krishna is ONLY PLEASED WHEN worshiped with the eight flowers above which are basically sattvic qualities of the mind and heart.

We should all try to become pure by being established in sattva-guna. And we should all cultivate these “eight flower qualities” along with meditation upon Radha Govinda. Then we can TRULY PLEASE KRISHNA with our eight flower offerings.  (praman:Padma Purana, Patala-kanda 84.56-60)

#BoonsOfBhagavatam #WhyReadBhagavatam #SrutiPhala #Vedas #ValueOfSrimadBhagavatam

If a very valuable thing is offered for free, who would not take it immediately?

In a handful of places, Bhagavan Shri Veda Vyasa offers special boons and benedictions i.e. phala shruti to anyone who reads the Bhagavatam in general, or particular chapters therein.

Besides receiving wonderful benefits from these “charity verses”, one should get the idea that the daily hearing, reading and studying of the Srimad Bhagavatam is both mentally beneficial, and spiritually a most powerful, prema-producing limb of bhakti bhajana.

There are many verses of blessings and benefits in the Srimad Bhagavatam. You can look for them, note down, and apply in appropriate circumstances.

In our sadhana life of forty-two years, we have often utilized these Bhagavata benedictions to overcome obstalces, and gain the positive spirit to practice bhakti bhajana with renewed enthusiasm. Srimad Bhagavatam ki jai!
